Two "unwilling" witnesses are expected to take the stand in the
corruption trial of former top cop Jackie Selebi on Friday.
Just before lunch on Thursday, prosecutor Gerrie Nel asked the
High Court in Johannesburg to stand down as he needed to resolve
the matter with the legal teams of the unwilling witnesses.
He said they would be ready to testify by Friday morning.
After establishing that the witnesses had been subpoenaed, Judge
Meyer Joffe said that they would be expected to tell the court why
they were not available to testify on Thursday.
One of the witnesses expected to take the stand is a SA Revenue
Service Manager Johan van Loggenrenberg. The Star previously
reported that he will be able to relate details of an alleged
meeting held between businessman Gavin Varejes, Selebi and SARS.
Glenn Agliotti, convicted drug trafficker and former
self-proclaimed friend of Selebi's has previously claimed he set up
the meeting.
The state's case is expected to wrap up within days.
Selebi is being tried on a count of corruption and another of
defeating the ends of justice in connection with at least R1.2-million he allegedly received from Agliotti and others in return for favours.
