A three-year-old girl is fighting for her life after she nearly drowned in her family's swimming pool in Sandton on Saturday, paramedics said.

ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak said family members found the girl floating in the pool on Saturday afternoon.

It is unclear how girl gained access to the pool and how long she had been in the water until she was found.

"Paramedics arrived at the scene and found a local doctor performing CPR on the little girl next to the pool," he said.

Paramedics managed to resuscitate the girl, after which she was rushed to the Morningside MediClinic for further treatment.

Vermaak said her condition is critical and unstable.
