A North Gauteng court has turned down an application by taxi companies for a court interdict to block the implementation of the Bus Rapid Transit system.

Judge Willie Seruti said the applicants did not provide a strong enough case for the matter to be heard as a matter of urgency.

The dismissal of the application means next week?s planned nationwide strike by taxi drivers may go ahead. It is unclear if taxi bosses will meet government officials to avert a strike.

It was a frustrating start to the day for the operators as they had to wait for six hours before their application was heard.

Soon after the hearing was concluded the bosses started making plans to meet on Sunday to discuss calling off a planned nationwide strike against the implementation of the BRT system.

If the meeting goes ahead it will coincide with the launch of the Rea Vaya system (the name of the BRT system in Johannesburg).
