The Gauteng health department has set up a committee to
investigate the circumstances surrounding the amputation of a
toddler's legs, MEC Qedani Mahlangu's spokesperson said on Tuesday.
"The MEC appointed a six-member team," said her spokesperson Mandla
Sidu.
This was after a meeting on Monday to discuss the amputation of
two-year-old Thembisa Kometsi's legs after she was admitted for
treatment for burn injuries on her hands.
Sidu said management and staff who worked on the case said the
girl had also developed gangrene in her legs, necessitating the
amputation.
"They said everything was done according to the books. She
received proper assistance."
However, the team would review the circumstances and make a
final decision within seven days.
They would also investigate why a father had to search through a
mortuary to find his baby who had died during birth.
