The lawyer of a Cape Town man who has been granted asylum in Canada maintains the South African government was unable to protect his client from crime.
Brandon Huntley applied for refugee status last year. He was living in Canada illegally.
Canada's immigration board found that Huntley had presented a clear picture of the unwillingness and inability of the South African government to protect whites against racially driven attacks.
And it seems not everyone is scoffing AT the former Capetonian's controversial approach.
"My office has already received a call from someone asking about the process [for application]. My answer to that person was that in a proper case an argument can be advanced," said Huntley's lawyer Russell Kaplan on Tuesday.
The decision has created a stir locally with the move being slammed as racist by the government and the African National Congress.
