The Home Affairs Department says it is confident white South Africans will reject claims they are targeted by criminals because of their race.

South African Brandon Huntley was granted refugee status in Canada recently after he claimed the state did not have the capacity to protect him.

The Canadian Immigration Board accepted the 31-year-old's argument that being attacked seven times in South Africa put his life in danger.

"These allegations would have been as preposterous as they are laughable had they not been of such a serious nature," said Home Affairs spokesperson Ronnie Mamoepa.

Mamoepa said the department is sure the majority of white South Africans disagree with Huntley?s claims.

"They would know that together with their black counterparts in this country we are doing everything possible to ensure that [South Africa] is the best country for all of us to live in."
