African National Congress Youth League leader Julius Malema has hit out at local councillors who enrich their friends and family.

Malema was delivering the annual Peter Mokaba Lecture in Vereeniging, south of Johannesburg.

He said the generation of 1976 did not march so people could reserve jobs for friends.

Malema said people who enter politics must not expect to be rich.

"To be a mayor, to be a councillor, to be premier, minister or president is not different from being a priest — it is a calling," said Malema.
