A 12-year-old girl was raped in front of her mother and younger brother at their Mthatha home, Eastern Cape police said on Friday.

An intruder kicked the door open on Thursday night, tied up the mother and eight-year-old boy, and then raped the girl, Superintendent Mzukisi Fatyela said.

The suspect, who is unknown to the family, escaped with only R30.

The girl's father was not at home at the time.

Fatyela said police were following up on information but no arrests had been made yet.
