The Judicial Service Commission says Judge Nkola Motata’s decision to appeal his drunk driving conviction will delay its probe into a complaint about his racist rantings.

The North Gauteng High Court judge was sentenced in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court on Wednesday — he was ordered to pay a R20 000 fine or face 12 months in jail.

Motata crashed his car into the garden wall of a Hurlingham property in 2007.

The JSC's Morumo Moerani said the judge's decision to appeal looked set to delay the finalisation of the matter.

Civil rights group AfriForum lodged a complaint with the JSC over racist remarks Motata made after he crashed his car.

Motata's defense council told the court Motata was eager to get to work — he has been on special leave for the duration of his trial.
