Reserve Bank Governor Tito Mboweni says the country's money may start to feature new designs soon.

He would not be drawn on when any changes could be made but said notes should not stay static.

Mboweni is stepping down in November and will be replaced by Gill Marcus.

He said people should take a good look at their notes.

"It's not a bad idea, from time to time, to change the security features of your currency. There are some very nice designs and there might still be an elephants (sic) or a Springbok."
