This weekend marks a year since former President Thabo Mbeki was recalled from office.
In a development that rocked South African politics, Mbeki stepped down as president after Judge Chris Nicholson's findings he might have interfered in the prosecution of now President Jacob Zuma.
Looking back on the last 12 months ANC Treasurer Matthews Phosa said he respected Mbeki for doing the right thing."When he realised decisions which had those implications were taken he respected the democratic views in the movement and did the right thing."
Mbeki and his former deputy Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka are both staying quiet on the events of a year ago and people close to them will not share what they are doing now. One of Mbeki's closest allies Essop Pahad remembered his mood well when news of the recall decision broke. "We're very happy when they appoint us and I think we should be happy when they recall us, so it's not a problem." Then came several surprises when cabinet ministers resigned, some were reappointed, others were not and Kgalema Motlanthe became president. Idasa's Steven Friedman said, "Unfortunately he was always in a position when he would get punished for showing leadership." Motlanthe was able to steer the country through a peaceful election before handing over power to Zuma.
Got something to say?
