A reported decision by Limpopo police that statements will in future only be taken in English has roused the anger of the Freedom Front Plus, whose spokesperson Pieter Groenewald says it is unconstitutional.
Groenewald said on Friday that the right to a reasonable trial is taken away if the statements are taken only in English.
"It cannot be expected of anyone to give a statement which then becomes a court document in a language which is not the choice of that person," he said.
He added that English is in the ninth position of the most used languages in Limpopo.
"Section 6(3)(a) of the Constitution stipulates clearly that with such a decision the language's usage, practicality, regional circumstances and the balance of the needs of the preferences of the population in the province must be taken into account," Groenewald said.
"The police (are) disregarding the Constitution with their actions.
"The Freedom Front Plus will be submitting a complaint with the Pan South African Language Board (PANSALB) and direct a written communication to the Minister of Police, Mr Nathi Mthethwa, to intervene immediately."
