Provincial traffic authorities are out in full force as thousands of motorists are heading to their holiday destinations.

The department said the N2 between Caledon and Hermanus, Swellendam and Mossel Bay, is particularly busy this morning.

Last night, officials recorded 1000 cars passing through Sir Lowry's Pass every hour. The R27 west coast road has also seen a rise in traffic flow.

Provincial traffic spokesperson Xenophone Wentzel said officials are on high alert.

"Yes, all traffic officers is [sic] on duty and high visibility patrols will also be in place. So we have a special law enforcement intervention operational plan."
