The SA Revenue Services (Sars) confiscated 400 tons of clothing and textile goods valued at R60-million in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, it said on Friday.
According to Sars the goods were seized during non-compliance to Customs and Excise raids around the city over a period of three days.
"The raids are part of a nation-wide operation in response to the challenges faced within the local clothing and textile industry."
During the raids Sars also seized prohibited goods including 200kg abalone, 10 000 counterfeit DVDs and Movate cream tubes worth R150 000.
"The interventions were aimed at ensuring compliance with the Customs and Excise Act, while protecting the local clothing and textile industry against the unfair business practices."
A total of 85 stores were raided of which 47 were closed as they failed to provide proof of import declaration for the goods in their stores.
The joint initiative was led by Sars Customs and included the Durban metro police, the SA Police Service, and the departments of health and home affairs.
