The South African National Defence force is boosting crime fighting operations in the Johannesburg CBD.

Soldiers are now helping police officers conduct raids in Parktown, Braamfontein, Hillbrow and surrounding areas.

At least 78 people have been arrested as part of the operation.

"The involvement of the army on joint operations has the advantage of communities becoming familiar with soldiers including the nature of their duties," said the police's Bhekisizwe Mavundla.
