A Gauteng man was arrested in Port Elizabeth on Friday after he allegedly opened a false hijacking case in the Eastern Cape city, police said.
Captain Sandra Jense van Rensburg said the man alleged that he had been hijacked in Springfield on Wednesday.
He said he was in the city for a wedding and had just come back from a bachelor's party when three men accosted him at gunpoint and bundled him into the boot of his VW Gofl GTi.
He told police that the men drove with him in the boot to Jeffreys Bay where they stopped and assaulted him before leaving him there.
The man said he tried to walk back to Port Elizabeth until he got a lift from a truck that dropped him off at the Humansdorp police station where he opened the case.
The vehicle was found on Thursday morning abandoned on the N2 freeway near the Greenbushes off-ramp with some damage.
Police suspect that the man got drunk at the bachelor's party and damaged his own car before claiming he was hijacked.
It was not clear if the vehicle was his own or hired.
Got something to say?
