The City of Johannesburg has urged residents to seek medical attention if they suspect they may have contracted measles.

There is an outbreak of measles in Johannesburg with more than 53 cases being confirmed in the last two weeks.

Children, adults and especially teenagers have caught the disease.

The city?s Antonia Barnard said even people who had been immunised were at risk.

"Generally people that have been immunised are protected but there is a small chance a person who has been immunised can still be infected therefore with anyone who gets a rash or has contact with someone with the disease should get a vaccination."
