The Premier Soccer League (PSL) must accept the outcome of the
South African Football Association (Safa) election, which placed
Kirsten Nematendani at the helm of the soccer administrator, the
ANC Youth League (ANCYL) said on Wednesday.
"There is no-one with an entitlement to soccer leadership and
administration in South Africa and all those who participate in
soccer administration must abide by the democratic process that
characterises the soccer administration bodies," the ANCYL said in
a statement.
"Kirsten Nematendani is a democratically elected president of
Safa and all democracy-loving South Africans should accept such
reality."
The league called on the PSL to accept the outcome of the
election, which placed World Cup local organising committee (LOC)
and PSL chairman Irvin Khoza up against LOC chief executive officer
Danny Jordaan.
Both of them withdrew from the race, leaving Nematendani as the
only candidate for the presidency.
"Attempts by PSL to undermine the Safa leadership should be
immediately halted and all focus dedicated towards preparations of
a successful FIFA 2010 Soccer World Cup," the ANCYL said.
On Tuesday, the PSL described the Safa election as
unconstitutional and illegitimate.
It said Judge Ralph Zulman had ruled that the election of the
Safa president should be postponed in view of the uncertainty over
rival claims that Jordaan and Khoza were not eligible for election.
Zulman was the electoral officer at Safa's annual general
meeting who was constitutionally entrusted with making all relevant
decisions.
"With the electoral officer having made this ruling, the meeting
legally could not proceed," the PSL said.
