The situation at the Sakhile township in Standerton, Mpumalanga remains tense as violent protests in the area continue.

Police opened fire several times to disperse angry crowds and several people were arrested.

The rain forced residents undercover but they have promised to return to the streets later.

Municipal workers are using the opportunity to clear the R23 that was lined with rocks and rubble by protestors.

The road remains closed because of fears of further violence.
