African National Congress Youth League leader Julius Malema on Thursday courted controversy again by saying there is no such thing as a hermaphrodite.

He was responding to questions after saying he believed Athletics South Africa boss Leonard Chuene should not have admitted he lied over the handling of Caster Semenya's gender tests before she left for the IAAF World Championships in Berlin in August.

Semenya's gender was called into question after she won the 800 metres women?s event convincingly.

Ten days ago Chuene admitted he had lied about whether the 18-year-old had undergone gender testing.

Malema said he was making a point about culture.

"In Pedi there is nothing like that. When a child is born you announce it as a baby girl or a baby boy. We have never heard in the village a child being projected, 'We are given a hermaphrodite'," said Malema.

"There's never been such a thing in a village we come from.

"Why should we be told today our children are hermaphrodites? She's a girl and why should we accept concepts that are imposed on us by the imperialists? We will never agree to that concept. You are either a girl or a boy and that's it."
