A Mitchell's Plain community leader has denied he told residents to turn off their water meters to create the impression the provincial government was not delivering adequate services.

Western Cape Premier Helen Zille was reportedly told by some community members this was done to gain the sympathy of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Sicelo Shiceka who visited the area this week.

It is claimed that ANC member Sulyman Stellenboom ordered locals in Mitchell's Village to turn off their meters just before Shiceka's visit to make it appear as if there were water disruptions.

Stellenboom has vehemently refuted the allegations.
