There is good news for teachers who have been bogged down by paperwork because of the national curriculum. Their work load will be reduced as early as January.

Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga says it is part of changes to the curriculum.

In July, a task team was appointed to investigate problems in the implementation of the curriculum.

She says the team made several recommendations which are being considered.

"They recommend that there is a need to reduce the amount of administrative work for teachers, that we discontinue the learner portfolios, and that we reduce the number of learning programmes or subjects between grade 4 and 6," Motshekga explained on Friday.

Motshekga said her department decided not to support the capping of school fees.
