The African National Congress has announced it is launching a task team to help and support athlete Caster Semenya.

Semenya has been under close scrutiny after her victory in the women's 800 metres event at the IAAF World Championships in Berlin in August.

Her gender was called into question after her stunning victory.

An Australian newspaper reported that IAAF tests revealed that Semenya was inter-sexed, meaning she had both male and female reproductive organs.

Initially, Athletics South Africa President Leornard Chuene said Semenya's gender was not tested by local doctors before the world championships.

Chuene later admitted he lied, saying he did so to protect Semenya.

He has since faced a barrage of criticism, with some organisations, including the ANC, even calling for action to be taken against him. But despite the calls the ASA board says it stands behind Chuene.

The ANC says it wants all sectors of the South African society to rally behind Semenya and help her.

ANC spokesperson Jackson Mthembu also says the party wants everyone involved in the affair to take some kind of censure.

This constrasts with what the ANC Youth League has been saying. Last week ANCYL leader Julius Malema said Chuene should not have apologised for lying.

The ANC also says it is dedicated to making sure Semenya is allowed to continue her career as a female athlete.

Members of the task team that will help her include ANC Secretary General Gwede Mantashe, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela and Manto Tshabalala-Msimang.
