Transport Minister Sbu Ndebele has urged motorists to be patient while construction work continues, saying the end result will be worth the inconvenience.

Ndebele visited various construction sites in the province on Tuesday.

Work started in April last year as part of the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project. The plan has caused congestion on the roads as motorists spend more time stuck in traffic while lanes get upgraded..

Ndebele said although motorists might be inconvenienced now but an improved road network will benefit them in the long run.

"In order to have an omelette you have to break an egg," said the minister.

For some of the motorists spending longer hours in traffic their frustration has turned to aggression.

The South African National Roads Agency Limited's Nazir Allie said construction workers have bore the brunt of road rage.

"People become impatient and they don't recognise the work which is being done by the construction workers. There is a lot of abuse," said Allie.

Last week, a construction worker was knocked down on the N1 highway in Midrand by a speeding motorist who claimed he was rushing because he late for work.
