Former Springbok star Percy Montgomery is being investigated for allegedly assaulting his wife at the weekend.

Montgomery was arrested on Sunday after apparently throwing a punch at his wife at her parents' home in Umhlanga.

He was released on R1500 bail and was charged with assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm.

Officials say the two were drunk when they had an argument during which Montgomery allegedly squeezed his wife's leg and punched her.

He was also accused of assaulting his father-in-law.

The police's Vincent Madunga said he would be back in court in November.
