The now withdrawn assault charge against former Springbok star Percy Montgomery was "laid in haste and an over-reaction" to an argument between him and his wife, the couple said on Friday.

Montgomery and his wife, Tasmin, said they were "together and very happy as a family".

"... no charges are being pressed, no court appearances will be taking place and we are simply distressed that ten minutes of flared tempers have led to headlines," read the statement issued on behalf of the couple by SA Rugby.

"No one was punched nor was anyone injured although a piece of furniture was struck in frustration. The charge has been withdrawn while our apologies and thanks go to the South African Police Service for their understanding," it continued.

The matter had been "closed" in the family from Monday and they would be making no further comment.

Montgomery was arrested for allegedly assaulting Tasmin by squeezing her leg and punching her.

The incident reportedly took place at Tasmin's parents' apartment in Umhlanga Rocks on Sunday.

Montgomery appeared in the Verulam Magistrate's Court on Monday and was charged with assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.

He was released on bail of R1500.

A lawyer involved in family discussions has confirmed that the charge was withdrawn on Friday morning.
