A Mitchell's Plain street committee chairperson has been shot dead on the Cape Flats.

Tafelsig Street Committee Chair Mervin Jacobs was shot dead on Saturday.

He was killed by alleged gangsters while patrolling the area.

Vice Chairperson Omar Hassen was also wounded.

Mitchell's Plain Police Director Jeremy Veary says a group of men travelling in a Vehicle opened fire.

"The occupants of the vehicle shot at and killed Mr. Mervin Jacobs, the street committee chairperson and injured Mr. Omar Hassen, the vice chairperson of the street committee," said Veary.

He believes street committees are being targeted by gangsters.

Last month, Rocklands CPF member, Vincent Naidoo, was shot dead by alleged gangsters while patrolling the area in his wheelchair.
