A train has crashed into a car at a train station outside Meyerton in southern Johannesburg but it is not clear if anyone was hurt in the incident.

The train was pulling out of the station shortly after 7am on Saturday when the driver reported seeing three people trying to flag him down.

However, it was too late and the driver crashed into a yellow Alfa Romeo, which was parked across the tracks, dragging the vehicle for about a kilometer.

"Upon arrival of paramedics they found the car ripped into pieces. There was no blood, no person or any sign of a person that was in the car at the time of the incident," said ER24'S Werner Vermaak.

Police search units are still combing the area while uniformed patrols try to trace the vehicle's owner.
