An outraged South African Air Force captain is demanding justice after Pretoria flying squad officers mistook his car for a hijacked vehicle and accidentally shot and killed a friend of his.

Two other people who were in his car were also wounded.

Officers say they used sirens and blue lights to stop Simon Mathibela in Mabopane, north of Pretoria, in the early hours of Sunday morning but Mathibale has denied this.

The police's Julia Klaasen says officers tried to stop Mathibela.

"The police tried to stop the vehicle by putting on their blue lights and sirens," says Klaasen.

Mathibela has a different story to tell.

"I am a pilot. I am tested for my hearing. There were no sirens; there was one flash of blue lights and shots fired and my friend is died," says Mathibela.

He says he wants heads to roll, also blaming President Jacob Zuma for his role in the tragedy.

"The president made a mistake by giving police powers that he could not control."

The Independent Complaints Directorate says the officers, who opened fire, will face murder and attempted murder charges once ballistic tests prove who pulled the trigger.
