Authorities are closely monitoring two service delivery hotspots in Gauteng and Mpumalanga following violent demonstrations on Monday.

In Palm Ridge, Thokoza, 15 people are behind bars facing charges of public violence, following Monday's protests.

Police officers opened fire, using rubber bullets, after protesters pelted them with stones, blocked roads and burnt tyres.

The Ekurhuleni metro police's Kobeli Mokheseng says officers are monitoring the situation.

"We will intensify SAPS and EMPD just to patrol in the interim within the affected areas," says Mokheseng.

In the Sakhile Township, in Standerton, angry crowds went on the rampage on Monday, blocking streets with trees and burning tyres.

They are expected to march on the municipal offices on Tuesday morning.

Community spokesperson Phanuel Manana says they are not expecting the demonstrators to get out of hand.

"We try to maintain maximum discipline to ensure people are protected as well as properties," says Manana.
