Traffic officials have expressed concern about government employees who continue to disregard basic traffic laws.

In a staged blitz on the N2's bus and minibus taxi lane on Tuesday morning, a number of city and provincial government employees, as well as off-duty police officers, were fined for using the restricted lane during morning peak hour traffic.

Mayoral committee member for Safety and Security JP Smith told Eyewitness News government employees should know the law applies to everyone and they are not an exception to the rule.

"We've people refusing to stop and had to be pursued by the 'Ghost Squad' on the motorbikes to be pulled over further. That's an extra thousand rand on the offence.

"So if you think you are a smart ass and you don't stop, we will get you," said Smith.
