Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa says people should not assume that an incident in which police officers gunned down a woman in Mabopane on Sunday is directly linked to government's proposed changes to the Criminal Procedures Act.

Mthethwa visited Olga Kekana's family on Tuesday.

She was shot dead when officers opened fire on the car she was a passenger in.

The officers apparently mistook the vehicle for one that had earlier been stolen in the area.

Two other people were also wounded in the shooting.

Mthethwa says the proposed changes to the act should not give trigger happy officers a license to kill.

"This incident is not linked to government's approach to fighting crime," says Mthethwa's spokesperson Zweli Mnisi.
