A man was in a serious condition in hospital following a hijacking incident in Umlazi township outside Durban, paramedics said on Thursday.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Jeff Wicks said the man was shot in the chest by gunmen who hijacked him and his girlfriend in the township's S section on Wednesday night.

"The man alleges that he was forced out of the car while the hijackers drove towards the N2 carriageway near Isipingo... [the] hijackers are thought to have then fired two shots at him... one of which struck him in the chest," said Wicks.

While the hijackers drove off with his girlfriend, the injured man "managed to inch his way to the Metro Police station on Old Main Road were he found aid".

Police spokesperson Superintendent Buhle Ngidi said police were still searching from the man's girlfriend and the hijacked vehicle, which is believed to be a Volvo.
