As thousands of Hindu's around the world prepare to celebrate Diwali on Saturday, the national SPCA says pet owners need to be vigilant.

The SPCA's Christine Kuch says pets should be kept indoors, preferably in the kitchen with soft calm music playing in the background.

As night falls, many Hindus will light clay lamps and place them around their homes.

They will also be lighting fireworks for most of the night.

Kuch says people must not try to medicate their animals themselves.

"Sedatives for animals are not available in supermarkets. A warning for everybody out there: do not give pets medication designed or intended for humans, the most terrible complications can arise," she said.
