A 26-year-old man was killed when a vehicle he and his accomplices had allegedly hijacked crashed into a bridge on Sunday morning, Eastern Cape police said.

The accident happened around 1.30am on the road between Tsomo and Cofimvaba, near Qombolo village, Captain Jackson Manatha said in a statement.

The Toyota Corolla had been hijacked from two Ethiopian nationals on Butterworth's Mthatha Street on Friday night. They were forced out of their car at gunpoint.

"Police were still investigating a case of car hijacking when the accident was reported this (Sunday) morning."

Of the five men in the car when the accident happened, one was found dead and another was arrested. The other three managed to escape.

The car was badly damaged.
