Parliament's Communications Committee has hinted civil proceedings may have been initiated against companies awarded irregular lucrative contracts by the SABC.
Four senior staff members at the public broadcaster were suspended last week. Disciplinary probes will be now be conducted by independent parties. A report by the Auditor-General found executive management members had paid hundreds of millions of rand to companies without following proper procedures. Members of Parliament have said they believe the suspension of four senior SABC managers is only the tip of the iceberg. Chairperson of Parliament's Communications Committee, Ismail Vadi says he expects companies, who benefited from dirty deals with the broadcaster, will be sued. "I am led to believe that some civil action has already been instituted. I am hoping the board will make a statement on the matter very soon," says Vadi. SABC spokesperson, Kaizer Kganyago, declined to comment saying the information is too sensitive to discuss.
