Long-serving African National Congress political strategist Joel Netshitenzhe has quit.

His resignation on Tuesday as head of the presidency's policy co-ordination and advisory services (PCAS) unit follows "discussion and by mutual agreement" with National Planning Commission Minister Trevor Manuel, the presidency announced in a statement.

Netshitenzhe, who turns 53 in December, has served in government since 1994.

"He was the first chief executive officer of the Government Communications and Information System. He was instrumental in establishing the PCAS in the Presidency, which he has headed since its formation.

"His contribution to the development of policy and in improving co-ordination of implementation across government has been invaluable and is highly appreciated.

"The presidency wishes to thank Mr Netshitenzhe for his dedicated public service and wishes him well," the presidency said.
