The Cape Chamber of Commerce and Industry warned on Thursday that moving Parliament could have a dire impact on the Western Cape economy.

Government was reviewing the cost implications of keeping Parliament in Cape Town while the seat of government was in Pretoria.

During a post-cabinet media briefing on Thursday, government spokesperson Themba Maseko reiterated that no decisions had yet been taken on moving Parliament to Pretoria.

However, talk of a possible move has made big business in Cape Town nervous. The CEO of the Cape Chamber, Albert Schuitmaker, said relocating Parliament would significantly reduce the R15-billion government contributes to the province?s economy.

"We do not want to lose it. It is a significant part of our economy. I must admit when I read the article it ruined the rest of my day," said Schuitmaker.

He said it was not the first time that government considered moving Parliament and he hoped that like before, Cabinet would abandon the idea.
