It is all systems go for the 2009 matric exams which kick off on Monday.

Learners begin writing a variety of language papers this week.

It is the second year that matriculants will write exams based on the national curriculum statement which does not have higher or standard grade.

Eyewitness News also spoke a matriculant from the Kliptown informal settlement, who has had to endure trying circumstances to ensure he is prepared for his exams.

Simphiwe Lila is hoping for at least three distinctions in this year's matric finals despite his daily battle to study.

He lives in a Kliptown shack with his two brothers, a sister and his mother.

When most people are sleeping, he sits alone studying at a local community hall.

"I start at 8pm and finish around 3am," says Lila.

Lila says although he did not always get the support he needed, it has motivated him to push even harder.
