The Free State University says the doors are open for public debate about Rector Jonathan Jansen's decision to drop internal disciplinary action against the so-called Reitz Four.

The four former students are facing charges of crimen injuria after making five black cleaning staff members participate in a racist initiation video.

Jansen's decision sparked outrage and he has been accused of supporting racism by pardoning the four.

The Free State University's Council says it is available for public debate about Jansen's decision to drop internal disciplinary against the Reitz Four but unions say they are not interested in the debate and want Jansen out.

They are threatening to protest at the university campus on Thursday and say they will stop classes if Jansen does not apologise and step down immediately. But Jansen is sticking to his guns and says his decision was made in the interest of national reconciliation and will not be influenced by union threats.
