The ANC has condemned the Freedom Front Plus for campaigning in favour of segregated residences at the University of the Free State.

The institution's former vice chancellor professor Frederick Fourie told Eyewitness News the FF Plus prevented him from integrating races in 2007 ? just before a racist video was produced in the whites-only Reitz Hostel.

The ANC's Jackson Mthembu was furious when told of what happened at the Free State University in the run-up to the production of the Reitz video.

"What the Freedom Front did was not assisting South Africa. It was unacceptable to South Africa as a whole," he said.

The FF Plus is a part of government, led by Pieter Mulder as a Deputy Minister.

Mthembu said that might actually help the situation.

"Mulder will be able to speak some sense to them since they are nearer," he said.

Winnie Madikizela-Mandela said she was angry at the situation at the institution.

"These actions are very provocative and no-one wants to see where they come from. It was a very brutal past," she said.

She said the party must take some of the blame: "We tend to deal with these situations superficially. Where is transformation in education?"
