The South African Weather Service has warned motorists in parts of Gauteng to brace for heavy rains that could last into Thursday night.

Forecaster Evert Scholtz urged people to be cautious on the roads, saying "it will last about two hours, up to about 6pm. There could be a bit of a break but we are expecting further rain and thunder showers over night."

Disaster management officials are on standby, monitoring the possibility of flooding in low-lying areas.

Johannesburg emergency service's Percy Morokane urged motorists not to be reckless as they head home.

"We are advising people to please listen to the messages that are broadcast over the radio," he said.
