Former Springbok captain Joost van der Westhuizen on Monday said he never took a lie detector test after his sex tape scandal broke out.

Van der Westhuizen initially said he took a lie detector test to prove he was not the man seen taking drugs and performing sex acts with a blonde woman.

He has finally admitted in his new book, Joost: Man in the mirror, that he is the man shown taking drugs with 24-year-old Marlize van Emmenis.

The World Cup-winning former player vehemently denied he was the man in the sex tape that van Emmenis, a stripper, produced earlier this year.

Van der Westhuizen said private investigator Mike Bolhuis also lied to the media about the lie detector test.

Bolhuis has denied the claims, saying as far as he knew the proper procedures were followed for the tests.

Van der Westhuizen said he decided to come clean about his involvement in a sex tape because he was tired of "living a lie."

He said the book is honest.

"It tackles everything head on. It is probably the most honest book you will read in your life for the simple fact that if I don't do this the press will go on hitting at me and my family," said the former rugby star.
