The City of Cape Town has denied claims it is only giving electricity to coloured residents living in the suburb of Overcome Heights near Steenberg.

Some residents claim the city promised every household would be catered for but coloured residents have been given first preference.

Mayor Dan Plato visited the area on Sunday and was confronted by angry residents, some of whom threatened him verbally and with makeshift weapons.

Ward Councillor Dimitri Quallie said the reason only half of the residents have electricity is because they still need to build a road in Overcome Heights.

He said the mayor has promised to sort out the issue.

"The mayor has undertaken to meet with SANRAL [South African National Roads Agency Limited] to discuss if they're going to construct and when they're going to construct a road in the area."

In 2005, it is believed people invaded the land now know as Overcome Heights.

Quallie said the area is divided by one tarred road and they cannot install electricity poles until they build another road.

"The city did agree to electrify and it has electrified in the non-road reserve area but because of the problem of a road having to be built at some stage one cannot put electricity in if its going to end up having to be taken out in a short space of time."
