National Police Commissioner Bheki Cele on Monday said the process of introducing military ranks to the South African Police Service is still going ahead.

The Police Ministry wants the police service to be transformed into a paramilitary force, with military ranks and discipline.

Cele said efforts are underway to start making the changes.

"The police who were tasked with working on them [the changes] have done so but there are processes to follow. For instance, changing the ranks means changing regulations. The minister will have to change those regulations. That will happen soon," said the commissioner.
