The Alexandra Clinic in northern Johannesburg was closed on Tuesday after a hold up at the medical facility. Two men arrived at the clinic on Monday to seek treatment for their apparently injured friend.

When nurses started questioning the men, one of them pulled out a firearm and held a nurse and security guard at gunpoint before fleeing.

No shots were fired, but clinic CEO Lebane Maluleke said staff members were very traumatised.

"We arranged for counselling and the clinic has been closed and we are re-opening again on Wednesday. We are seeing if there are any immediate solutions that we can implement to ensure the safety of the staff members," he said.

Less than a month ago, a 24-year-old educational psychology intern was shot and killed outside the facility in a botched hijacking.
