Deputy Transport Minister Jeremy Cronin has told Parliament that traffic officers should be allowed to do their jobs without fear or favour.
Cronin on Tuesday told MPs that government is looking into allegations that Julius Malema had tried to evade a speeding ticket.
Weekend newspaper reports suggest the ANC Youth League president had allegedly tried to solicit help from senior ANC leaders when pulled over by traffic officers in Limpopo.
It's also claimed he made threatening remarks towards the traffic officials. DA MP Dianne Kohler-Barnard did not mince her words as she lashed out at Malema for allegedly trying to sidestep the fine.
"The head of the ANC youth, Julius Malema has apparently asked traffic police in Limpopo who had the unmitigated gall to stop him for speeding, do you know who I am."
Cronin responded, saying an investigation to establish the facts is underway.
"We are going into the matter. We want to assure South Africans that none of us are above the law. These are allegations we wish to stress at the moment, but we are seeking to establish what exactly happened."
Cronin promised his department's full support to traffic officers in the execution of their duties without prejudice.
Got something to say?
