Police were set to be out in force at the University of Zululand on Thursday to ensure exams go smoothly, after students vandalised facilities.

Two lecture halls, a computer lab, student offices and two dining halls — one of which was set alight — were trashed on Tuesday night.

Political rivalry between youth movements associated with the ANC and IFP was thought to be behind the vandalism.

"We are not expecting any violence now, because the police are around there and we are making sure that there is no more violence taking place," said the police's Mbongeni Mdlalose.

The IFP's SA Democratic Student Movement on Wednesday released a statement, blaming the attacks on the ANC's South African Students Congress, because its offices were among the buildings that were targeted.

Mdlalose said no one had been arrested in connection with the incident and he could not say which group was responsible.

"The police are still investigating the case of public violence and arson. We think it is politically related, although we cannot point fingers at anybody, because the investigation is still continuing."
