Police shot dead seven armed robbers on Sunday morning in Polokwane, Limpopo.

National police spokesperson Nonkululeko Mbatha said the incident occurred after midnight.

Operational and crime intelligence members responded promptly when the armed suspects approached the Coin Security depot in an industrial area of Polokwane.

An exchange of fire ensued between the police and the gunmen leaving seven suspects dead.

No one in the police was injured during the shooting, Mbatha said.

She said the suspects, who all had balaclavas over their heads, were in possession of grinders that they would have used to break into the building.

"The national commissioner commends these members for the excellent work done. This is once again a warning to criminals that they should live in extreme fear as the police squeeze them to zero while they serve and project."
