A Worcester motorist will appear in the Oudtshroon Magistrate's Court on Monday for allegedly running down and killing an athlete.

Sanet Wentzel was hit by car while jogging with her friends on the road between the Cango Caves and Oudtshroon over the weekend.

The 41-year-old mother of two died on the scene and the 26-year-old driver was arrested.

It is suspected he was driving drunk.

The police's Louis Visser said the man faced a number of charges including culpable homicide and drunken driving.

It is understood Wentzel was also a keen cyclist.

Southern Cape Cycling Association President Corne Bence said there should be tougher policing of drunken driving.

"We want the police must get more involved and see what they can do in the morning with the roadblock."
